As I'm observing E3 via live video feeds, twitter, and gaming news articles, I can't help but notice an interesting trend in the trailers. This year's movie trailers are wittier, more suspenseful, and more emphatic than previous E3 trailers. Some developers even went through the trouble to hire a Narrator. In short, a lot of the game trailers are mimicking movie previews. Meaning, developers are using game trailers to attract gamers to the characters, the storytelling, and the graphics style more than the game play. I'm most excited because, I relish the quality of storytelling in games, and I can always tell a good movie from its preview. Here are some game trailers that I'm most excited about and why.

What's up?

A pure action game published by Sony. The action looks amazing, and the combos look top notched.

What's down?

It's a very vague trailer. It's like they took a "Little Tortilla boy" approach. Viewers aren't left with what to expect as far as subject matter or depth. We just know it looks cool and it's by Sony.

What's up?

Brutal Legend looks hilarious, and humor driven games are pretty rare. Also, this is the first game I've ever seen fueled with star power. A game, starring Jack Black and featuring Lemmy Kilmister, Lita Ford, and Ozzy Osbourne, doesn't sound like a game at all, but an absurd sequel to School of Rock.

What's Down?

The trailer shows that the game has potential to be hilarious, but it could be like one of those movies where all the funny parts were in the preview. I'd wait to read the reviews on this one.

What's up?

Out of all the trailers. This one is technically the most complex. The voice actors sound amazing. The lip synching was exquisite. And the graphics are top notched. Naughty Dog went above and beyond on this one. The plot in Among Thieves looks more complex than the previous trailers, and there's the classic American attractions girls, guns, and explosions. The perfect preview.

What's down?

With that said, what might look like a perfect trailer might not make a perfect game. If the gameplay doesn't work, and the game is filled with slow loads and glitches, then it's game over for Uncharted 2. But really, that goes for any game. We can expect great things from Uncharted 2.

What's up?

A tale between boy and beast. Stylistically epic and brilliant in graphics detail, words weren't needed to describe the successor to Shadow of the Collosus, The Last Guardian. It did a great job describing setting the tone of the gameplay as stealth driven and puzzle based.

What's down?

Might not appeal to the more hardcore crowd.
