Bullets and blackmail and beaches...a hit man and a hurricane and a high-stakes political campaign ...And Night Falls ramps up the action and suspense when Pensacola native Shelley Goodnight finds the body of a murder victim...but not just any victim. Dead man Farrell Gilbert worked at the desk next to Shelley's in her father's real estate office...an inconvenient fact the authorities can't ignore. Add a hitman, Hurricane Ivan, and conscientious Deputy Clay Cameron from Santa Rosa County to the mix, and the tension tightens like a corkscrew.
Review
First of all, I'd like to thank Tommie Lyn for sending us a free copy of her novel so we could review it. Any aspirng writer should visit the internet forum ChristianWriters.com. I'd also like to apologize for taking so long to review these books. I finished reading ...and night falls weeks ago but I've been so swamped with work that I could not get to it until today. The Alpha Jan will be doing the review of Scribbles.
Now I'm something of a curmudgeon when it comes to mystery novels and movies/TV shows. It takes a surprise to impress me. I grew up reading Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, and the Boxcar Children then advanced to more complex stories. Considering how many mysteries I've read I have a bad tendency to guess the outcome very early on. I drive my wife Heather nuts when I do this with movies and TV shows like Monk.
With ...and night falls I guessed the identity of the villian immediately. I even correctly guessed potential motivations based upon the hints dropped early on. The only questions I had to wait on were the "how" and "why".
Fortunately, there's more to the story than just the mystery/crime, which I found to be straight-forward. The other half is a mix of romance and adventure. The characters were all well-developed with very few caricatures.
Considering that Tommie Lyn hails from ChristianWriters.com I figured that she'd incorporate a message into her story. Unfortunately, many writers do this in a hokey and/or unrealistic fashion, which leaves the message feeling forced. Tommie Lyn did not make this mistake and the beliefs and actions of the characters come naturally.
I read ...and night falls in two evenings, which is pretty amazing in itself. Usually I take weeks to finish a book unless it captures my attention. So obviously I enjoyed the ride. Overall, I would say it's a good book well worth your time, but I felt the mystery component was a bit weak with the clues broadcasted too early on.
