The short version: A historical gangster thriller that grapples with issues still relevent to today's world.

8 out of 10.

Click Read More for our thoughts.

Public Enemies opens with an audacious assault on Indiana State Prison, where Dillinger cracks out some friends who'd become part of his gang. It ends with his death, when FBI agents gun him down at the Biograph Theater in Chicago. In between we see Dillinger rob banks, shoot guns, fall in love and tangle with Melvin Purvis—the FBI agent who would eventually mastermind his downfall.

That's not a spoiler since this a well known bit of history. Even before I saw this movie I knew that Dillinger was a movie aficionado and that knowledge of this innocent habit allowed the FBI to take him down.

I saw Public Enemies on the 1st so my review is a bit late due to the July 4th weekend (although I did leave some comments on Twitter). I went with my wife. She's always been a huge Johnny Depp, as have I, but only for his acting talent.

It has always interested me how Hollywood humanizes criminals to be likeable. But that's a good thing... To me, the point with Public Enemies is that these people are not inhuman monsters. We are no better than they, self-righteous as we sometimes will be. Our sins may be different, and perhaps less in number, but that's still nothing before a holy God.

The timing of this movie is also interesting. Dillinger was apparently popularly liked by Americans due to the way his story was conveyed by the media. He was "robin hood" vs the "evil government and bankers".  The parallels with today are interesting. There's a feeling of general dislike for the government and the actions of many financial institutions. If someone were to copycat the actions of Dillinger would today's America likewise embrace this anti-hero?

Perhaps some people will only pay attention to the action. Car chases. Romance. Bang bang. Those are the highlights of most movies but does not entirely represent the undercurrent of this movie that gets you thinking. Well worthy of a 8 out of 10.
