The short version: Provides a combination of smashing and emotional depth the previous film lacked. 7 out of 10. Click Read More for our thoughts.
The Hulk is back...or perhaps he was never there before? The first thing noticeable is that this version of the Incredible Hulk seems to ignore the events of the prior movie. So this movie is more of a rewrite, which is probably a good thing. The movie could be called an origins movie, but it's a minor aspect, only recalled in the opening scene via flashback. Instead the focus is the personal conflict between General Ross, Bruce Banner, and Betty Ross. Bruce recognizes the medical benefits of his work, but all General Ross sees is the potential super-soldier weapon. Ross begins experimenting on a fellow soldier, Bronsky, who desires the power he sees embedded within the Hulk. Bronsky sees the Hulk as personal gain. Bruce hates and fears the Hulk, who he considers a separate entity and not a manisfestation of an alternate ego. His goal is to remove it from his life at any cost. Betty recognizes that the Hulk is not bad in itself, and tries to persuade Bruce to learn and control his transformation. A contrast is displayed between Bronsky as the Abomination and Bruce as the Hulk. Bruce fears the Hulk. Bronsky desires the powers bestowed. These desires are what makes Bronsky the Abomination. The screenplay writers are also attempting to tie in multiple movie franchises into a cohesive whole. Iron Man's Stark is mentioned numerous times as the provider of weapons used to find and defeat the Hulk. Remember the secret scene in Iron Man? Fortunately viewers don't have to wait till after the credits this time around. Our favorite secret organization SHIELD is forming a group...my money would go toward an impending Avengers movie announcement. Although I've heard that the Incredible Hulk 2 is already in the works. That's understandable. This movie was good. Not Incredible, but good. I've probably give it a 7 out of 10.
