Back in 2007, there were concepts through artwork and videos of the newest game by Nintendo that utilized being healthy in general. This new game would utilize a new kind of peripheral for the Nintendo Wii, which was doing swimmingly well around the world, that looked like a scale or board of some sorts. In December of 2007 in Japan it was released as the Wii Fit.

So far, there two major lawsuits that seem to put Nintendo in hot water but mostly the Wii Fit. The first lawsuit has to do with a 24 year old girl named Amanda Flowers who lives in Great Britain. It is reported she fell off the Wii Balance Board and became a “sex addict” as the result.

The other incident with the Wii Fit is more on copyrights and patents in which a Potomac, Maryland-based company that specializes in interactive exercise equipment filed a lawsuit against Nintendo and the balance board for patent infringement. IA Labs, has sued Nintendo’s Japanese headquarters for patent infringements on technologies used for the Wii Fit, Wii Fit Plus, the Wii balance board, Wiimote, Wii Wheel, Wii Motionplus, Wii Nunchuck, and the Wii Zapper. IA Labs has stated that they have been “irrefutably harmed” through Nintendo’s “continued infringement”. The patents in question are “Computer interactive isometric exercise system and method for operatively interconnecting the exercise system to a computer system for use as a peripheral” and “Force measurement system for an isometric exercise device.”"Computer interactive isometric exercise system and method for operatively interconnecting the exercise system to a computer system for use as a peripheral” and “Force measurement system for an isometric exercise device. “computer isometric exercise system and method for operative connecting of the exercise system to a console system as a peripheral” and “force measurement system for a isometric device” which is all fancy talk for the connection of the board to the Wii and the movement detection parts of the board.
It’s also been said that IA Labs and Nintendo were in talks back in 2007 and 2008 about the possible overlaps of their products and IA Labs was also considering licensing their technology to Nintendo. Now IA Labs is looking for an injuction on the alleged infringements plus damages. Eventually, Nintendo recently won an appeal stating that IA Labs was infringing on controller-related patents.
